In the New Year: Recouping & COVID

The writing project took a few days off. Writing was hard to do at times I’m still on a regimen of opiates and sleep. My plans to also use this time to read a bunch of books on my virtual shelf got quite a chuckle from my Kindle. For a while answering texts proved a challenge.

It’s only been a few days, but a lot has happened. I’ve been able to go out on a few walks for 15 mins at a time. It isn’t far or fast, but I’m at where I was pre-surgery with less pain. I definitely walk better. I graduated from a toilet seat lift to just the regular seat — which was far more amazing that can accurately be described. Toilet seats have that kind of power.

Then we learned, we had been exposed to COVID the day prior to my surgery. Technically, I was symptomatic, but those same symptoms come from being under anesthesia for seven hours. I tested twice — both negative. Joey wasn’t so lucky. Fortunately, as sick as he felt, the vax and booster probably kept it from being anything more than a few days of feeling yucky.

My incisions are healing quickly, but the bruises from multiple IV lines are not disappearing quickly at all. I have small veins, they tend to collapse, or roll. IVs were put in several places during the surgery and I had three lines when I woke — one in each arm and one in a shoulder. There were other attempts.

Bottom line is that I look pretty beat up. And I’m always tired. The pain is different than what I expected, but it can get fairly intense. Mid-morning through mid-afternoon is my sweet spot right now. Which is when I should have been writing this.

I’d also been looking forward to some visits from friends, but the COVID situation cancelled all hope for that this week. The bonus though, is that my mom is here visiting and helping tremendously. We get to have nice chats and the cats and Joey already look to her at dinner time. I’ll miss her when she goes home, but there is a little girl in Michigan counting the sleeps until her return.

Until tomorrow…
