Warning: may contain spoilers for the first two episodes of And Just Like That

Back in my 30s I was a die hard Sex and the City fan; even owning every season on DVD. While my collection is rendered obsolete by streaming services and endless marathons on cable television, the show lends itself to the nostalgia factor of trying to figure out (1) where my BluRay player went and (2) watching it on old tech.

Then came the movies. Kitschy in their own way they lost a bit of what made the series so special. I’ve seen the first one a few times, but am loathe to try and sit through the second one again.

And Just Like That debuted last week with its first two episodes. Not being able to watch it immediately, I tried to avoid all posts, reviews, and anything that might be a spoiler.

Admittedly watching after being at a funeral all day was not the way to go as it turns out. Imagine my surprise, wanting to see what my old friends were up to and sitting through another funeral. Mr Big was such a part of the first show that it seemed appropriate to building a story to have the character die. Had I given it any thought at all, I might have guessed it.

Nothing shocked me more in that first episode though, when over a steadfast scene of quick banter between friends at lunch, Amanda exclaimed that she was 55 in defense of her gray hair. Wait, what? Did she say she was 55? She is naturally gray and not just coloring it to be in chic style?

I had to quickly do some math in my head that went something like this…. so they were in their 40s when I was in my 30s, this doesn’t make sense because I’m — wait, I’m 47. When. Did. This. Happen? I resumed watching, realizing much to my own defeat that they were aged appropriately for the year. And how was that even fair?

It wasn’t just me. Shortly after that scene it was evident that our heroine Carrie was somewhat verklempt in her first day at the podcast gig with what is to be assumed Millennial counterparts talking about masturbation. As her boss told her after, you were writing a sex column in a mainstream paper in the 90s, you are the O.G. of rauchy.

It was definitely a moment when you missed Samantha… who has been cast off to London after a falling out with Carrie. They leave room for her return, assuming Kim Cattrall changes her mind about returning. But there is something interesting in that potential story line, a falling out after so many years into a friendship.

This may be the reboot I didn’t know I needed, or it may be one that has me searching for the Blu-Ray player, a cosmo, and my laptop to write about the perils of cohabitation and home ownership in my 40s. Which, let’s face it, I probably will eventually anyway.

As they say, to be continued…
